The President on Embryonic Stem Cell Research
During his State of the Union Address the President stated,
I will work with Congress to ensure that human embryos are not created for experimentation or grown for body parts, and that human life is never bought and sold as a commodity.Similar to JustOneMinute, at first glance this appeared reasonable to me and Bush's position seemed consistent with his prior opposition to the destruction of all human embryos. However, the newer statement gives more wiggle room and more opportunity for political compromise than what Bush communicated during the election debates.
What about human embryos created by fertility clinics that are donated to science for the development of therapeutic applications? The human embryos, in this scenario, are not "created for experimentation" or "grown for body parts".
All life is precious, including human embryos. If the President truly believes that destroying a human embryo is immoral, why not simply say, "I will work with Congress to ensure that human embryos are not destroyed, period"?
