Birthing Real Help with Adult Stem Cells

"When will embryonic stem cells reach the clinic? The answer is simple - not soon! ... although adult stem cells provide an alternative, more ethically acceptable, source." This opening is from a paper just published, where UK and Texas researchers show adult stem cells from umbilical cord blood with "embryonic- like" properties. It follows a report from the University of Pittsburgh showing adult stem cells from placenta with the flexibility of embryonic stem cells, but without tumor formation. One Pittsburgh researcher noted, "The placenta and umbilical cord appear to be rich sources for stem cells that have real potential to treat disease." The facts are increasingly evident, enough that one Pittsburgh scientist stored his newborn's placenta for future use.

Meanwhile, embryonic stem cells continue to play catch-up. A report from the UK this week touted turning embryonic stem cells into brain stem cells in a dish; yes, the excitement was about turning embryonic stem cells into...adult stem cells! Virginia, like many states, is considering where to put their money-embryonic or adult stem cells. Virginia should target actually helping patients with adult stem cells. And the U.S. Senate should stop holding patient treatments hostage to embryo research politics, and pass HR 2520, Rep. Chris Smith's Cord Blood bill.
